(A) SERVICES TO INDIVIDUALS

There are so many reasons which bring an individual to this country that it would be impossible in such a short space to list them all. Whatever your motivation is for coming to the United Kingdom, we have extensive experience in handling all aspects of immigration and nationality law for individuals.

Families

One of the biggest areas of migration is for reasons connected to family relationships. We have handled many cases for husbands and wives, elderly parents or re-uniting children who have been separated from their families here. We appreciate and understand the delicate nature of these relationships, and have been rewarded both by the restoration of the family unit as well as with the happiness it brings.

Employment/Self-Employment

The points-based category of entry, called the Highly Skilled Migrants Programme is now some 4 years old and has proved to be very attractive to individual applicants seeking to establish themselves in the UK in a work-related capacity. It is extremely flexible regarding the manner in which commercial activities can be carried on, and many applicants now look to the Scheme as their preferred means of entry to, or continued stay in, the UK for either employment or the establishment of their business. The UK is one of the leading centres for education provision in the world, and the Government has continued to introduce a series of measures intended to attract overseas nationals into choosing the UK for their higher or further education. There have been substantial changes and amendments to the Immigration Rules, including the introduction of a number of specific schemes, which are all intended to allow graduates further opportunities to remain in the UK after their studies. We have had substantial experience of dealing with student applications as well as advising on eligibility for entry to these schemes.

Citizenship

The UK is one of the more forward-looking countries in recognising that an individual may both become a British Citizen as well as retain their previous citizenship. As the Home Secretary himself said in July 1998 "...we recognise that in the modern world, as well as owing an allegiance to the country in which they live, people also retain an affinity to the country of their roots. It is therefore possible to be a citizen of two countries and a good citizen of both". We have wide experience of applications for naturalisation of individuals as British Citizens, both on the basis of residence over 5 years, or after marriage where the period is only 3 years. We also make applications for registration, principally involving children, but also for those with a subsidiary British status. Nationality law is a very complex area, and we have considerable expertise in advising on an individual's entitlements.

Investment

As one of the leading financial centres in the world, it is for obvious reasons that individual investors see London's financial institutions and businesses as the obvious choice in which to invest their funds. Investments over a certain figure bring with them the right to live and work in United Kingdom, and ultimately lead to settlement and (if desired) naturalisation.

Retirement

Retired people whose income exceeds the immigration threshold can apply to live in the United Kingdom and ultimately settle here. This category plays an important part in the unification of extended families.

Other areas of work

Other areas of our work for individuals cover family rights arising under European legislation, applications for settlement after long periods of residence in the UK, the admission and continued stay of domestic staff, and regularisation of those whose stay has become irregular, under any published concessions which are periodically announced.

(B) SERVICES TO BUSINESS

Our services to business cover many key areas, both within the Immigration Rules and under the Work Permit Scheme.

Work Permits

A substantial part of our work involves work permit applications under the Work Permit Scheme, which is separately administered by an agency of the Home Office called Work Permits (UK). It is based in Sheffield in the north of England. We have handled work permit needs for a wide range of businesses involved in such diverse areas as industrial manufacturing, banking and financial services, information technology, hotels and catering, entertainment, media, sport, professional and business services, and many other trades and occupations. We can handle applications on an individual or multiple basis, both under the main part of the Scheme as well as for those receiving Training or Work Experience. Given the needs of business for financial certainty our fees are always set on a fixed basis, irrespective of the time we may spend on the matter.

Sole Representatives of Foreign Companies

Employers may wish to transfer you to the UK on a long-term assignment to set up a branch office. We can advise and assist Sole Representatives in complying with the immigration requirements as well as dealing with the corporate formalities.

Business People

If you wish to establish a business in the UK there is a minimum investment required of £200,000. The rules are detailed and the requirements are strictly applied. We can assist you on the formalities of creating a company, structuring the investment, and the employment of staff. We can advise you on the tax implications of your investment, and we work closely with accountants and auditors on the preparation of business plans and accounts.

Self Employment

If you have a particular artistic talent or wish to take advantage of trade agreements such as the Association Agreements, we can advise you on this self-employed activity and make applications for entry or stay. Whatever your commercial requirements may be to begin work in the UK, we can answer any of your questions promptly, and where the stated aim is achievable, deliver an effective business or employment solution.

Innovators

Within the business rules is the new innovator category. There is a self certifying procedure involving the calculation of points to reach a minimum acceptable score. We have provided assistance to many clients in this category, both in the completion of the form itself as well as the background preparation necessary as required through the various stages of the self certifying procedure. We would be happy to advise on the general aspects of the visa, or assist you in the more detailed preparation as you wish.

Highly Skilled Migrant Worker Programme

Although this category is related to business and employment, it is a service to the individual. Therefore, please see the services to the individual page and our update page for further information.
